Meet Dr. Porchia James

Dr. Porchia James grew up in Dallas, TX where she graduated from the High School for Health Professions at Townview Magnet Center. She always had a passion to help people, which is why she decided at a young age to pursue a healthcare profession.  As a teen, she pursued many medical and dental internships and volunteer opportunities in various hospitals in the DFW metroplex.  She desired a job that allowed her to practice larger surgical cases, participate in the medical aspect, but still in the dental field.

Dr. James is a goal and team oriented individual with great listening skills.  Her passion for oral surgery is illustrated in patient care. She will treat both children, teenagers, and adults while practicing the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. The most rewarding aspect of surgery for Dr. James is building rapport with new patients.  Dr. James’ objective is to provide empathy, love, and professionalism to all of her patients.  Dr. James is active in her community and she recently participated with a free children oral screening with Colgate & Walmart in Prosper, Texas.

Education

Dr. James attended Xavier University of Louisiana for her undergraduate career, where she graduated in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. She then earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from the Meharry Medical College in 2008. After graduation from dental school, Dr. James was promoted to Captain in the US Air Force where she was stationed at Keesler AFB (Biloxi, MS), RAF Lakenheath, UK (England), and Shaw AFB (Sumter, SC).  During her time in the Air Force, Dr. James volunteered to take extra call and work skillfully alongside Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, which increased her desire for surgery.

Residency

After her four active duty tenure in the US Air Force in the Dental Corps, she was allowed the opportunity to focus solely on Oral Surgery while stationed overseas.  It was at this time, she decided to return to an additional 4 year residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Meharry Medical College.  During her residency, she trained alongside ENT, plastic surgeons and licensed anesthesiologists. She gained valuable skills in the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery and the safe administration of anesthesia.
